The shortlists for the 2010 CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Children’s Book Awards were announced this morning.
Eight novels, described as compelling survival stories, are competing for the Carnegie Medal and eight illustrated books are on the Kate Greenaway Medal shortlist.
Unusually The Graveyard Book, by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Chris Riddell, appears on both shortlists: the first time in 30 years that a book has achieved this feat. The Graveyard Book is one of three books for older children on the Kate Greenaway list, proving that, in the words Chair of the CILIP judging panel Margaret Pemberton “picture books are not just for pre-schoolers. Illustrations can enrich the reading experience of all age-groups.”
Two previous winners, Philip Reeve and Terry Pratchett, are shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal, regarded by many as the most prestigious award for children’s writing.
The 2010 winners will be announced at a ceremony at BAFTA in central London on Thursday 24th June. A full list of the shortlisted books follows.
