Tara Books, the independent publisher from Chennai, south India, has won the 2010 Bologna Ragazzi Award for the handmade children's title, Do!
The award, which will be presented at the Bologna Children's Book Fair in March, is designed to acknowledge publishing houses from the Arab countries, Latin America, Asia and Africa that show great innovative talent.
Do! (ISBN: 9788190754613) is an introduction to basic verbs, aided by the elegantly minimalist pictograms of Warli tribal art. Warli art is a style belonging to a community that lives in Maharashtra, western India.
‘The idea for Do! came from the observation that people in Warli painting are active all the time, always doing something. It's a beautiful and dynamic art form, ideal for children's picture books, and I'm delighted that the book has won such a prestigious award.’ says Gita Wolf, Publisher, Tara Books
This is the second time Tara Books has won this award. In 2008, the New Horizons category was awarded to The Night Life of Trees, another of the press's handmade titles.
