Red House Children's Book Award 2010

Ten books are on the short-list for this year's Red House Children's Book Award, announced today, Monday 22nd February.

The Red House Children's Book Award is one of the biggest and most influential awards in children's publishing and the only one to be voted for by children themselves. This year it is celebrating its 30th birthday.

The first title to be honoured with the award was Quentin Blake's Mister Magnolia and over the last 30 years Janet & Allan Ahlberg, Roald Dahl, J.K. Rowling and Andy Stanton have all been winners. This year, Jeff Kinney's comic US bestseller Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw, is competing against books by established authors such as Cathy Cassidy and Jan Fearnley and talented newcomers Suzanne Collins and Tanya Landman.

The ten shortlisted titles are:

Books for Younger Children
A Very Strange Creature - Ronda Armitage and Layn Marlow (Orchard Books)
Crunch Munch Dinosaur Lunch! - Paul Bright and Mike Terry (Little Tiger Press)
The Baby Dragon-Tamer - Jan Fearnley (Egmont Books)
Bottoms Up! - Jeanne Willis and Adam Stower (Puffin Books)

Books for Younger Readers
Angel Cake - Cathy Cassidy (Puffin Books)
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw - Jeff Kinney (Puffin Books)
Mondays are Murder - Tanya Landman (Walker Books)

Books for Older Readers
The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins (Scholastic Children's Books)
Ausländer - Paul Dowswell (Bloomsbury Children's Books)
Love, Aubrey - Suzanne LaFleur (Puffin Books)

Over 1,000 titles were submitted for this year's award and the short-list, as well as 40 highly recommended titles, selected by children in testing groups organised by the Federation of Children's Book Groups.  Children nationwide are now invited to vote for their favourite of the ten short-listed books, with the category winners and the author of the best children's book published in 2009 announced at an awards ceremony on 22nd May 2010.  A dedicated website www.redhousechildrensbookaward.co.uk showcases all the short-listed titles and featured authors.
