Rod Campbell's strength lies in his ability to pinpoint precisely what the young child wants to know and put it into a form which matches exactly the stage of interest, of development and of humour. Henry's Ball works partly because it is helping children grasp the concept of positional language, something they like to have confirmed again and again, and partly because Campbell's tongue is firmly in his cheek and the unexpected often happens - in this case a lift-the-flap surprise at the end of the book.

Buster Gets Dressed focuses on a favourite topic, uses split pages to good effect and charms the children into reading and rereading.
