A 16th Century Mosque
Illustrated by Mark Bergin
This is an impressive addition to books on Islamic religion and culture. It explains how the idea and the structure of the mosque evolved and the function it serves. The book looks at the life style of the people of the area and the period chosen. It not only tells us about the most outstanding architect of the time, Sinan Pasha, Court Architect to Suleyman the Magnificent, but also discusses the technical and architectural problems encountered in the construction of the Suleymaniye mosque. The book is comprehensive enough to be used for reference with topics on science, technology and arts. It is skilfully and clearly illustrated. Especially helpful is a section on dates to simplify any possible confusion between the Muslim and Christian calendars. It also includes an excellent glossary.
