A Street Through Time
Illustrated by Steve Noon
I just love this sort of book where the reader can trace the development of a place - in this case a street along a river-bank from 10,000 BC to the present day, Initially, though, I was a little disappointed with this particular example with its busy drawings, cut-away pictures and copious annotation but it has grown on me the more I have looked at it. The landscape format is right for the linear nature of the street and the book opens nicely and sits well on a table for detailed study and is certainly big enough for two or three readers to look at and talk about together. Everyone will find their own favorite 'themes' to follow through the pages - I particularly liked the castle from Iron Age fort to its present status as a tourist attraction and the fact that the inn/pub has stood on the same site since the 1200s (not too happy with its present status as a trendy wine-bar though). The Roman pages remind you once again what an amazing civilization it was.
