Cover Story
This issue’s cover shows Jane Simmons’ popular character, Daisy, and her baby brother Pip. Two Daisy books with their ‘dynamic yet affectionate pictures’ full of painterly exuberance are reviewed in this issue. Thanks to Orchard Books for their help in producing this May cover.
Kitten Crowd/Puppy Puzzle/Hamster Hotel/Chick Challenge
Mandy, daughter of two vets, loves animals and knows a lot about them, too. Her eagerness to share this with her friends has fuelled the hugely successful 'Animal Ark' series which also worked well on television. But, the easy-to-read, page turning qualities of the 'Animal Ark' titles do not adapt well to tape. Predictable story lines can encourage reading but make dull listening and the story-telling device of characters 'telling' each other exactly what has happened soon begins to jar. Poor old Mandy comes over as a smug goody-goody. It is hard not to long for something terrible to happen to her.
