Samira's Eid

This picture book has a dual-text story available in ten languages. The story concerns of the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Fitr which follows the holy month of fasting known as Ramadan. It is a very special festival which is of great significance to Muslims and which has a visible impact on the daily routine within an Islamic household. The style of the book is such that it achieves its educational and religious purpose without being over-bearing. The story develops simply through the dialogue between two children, Samira and Hassan, and their parents. It is based on the actual day-to-day religious duties that occur during the holy month and this highlights the spirit of the festival and simultaneously provides the reasoning behind fasting, Eid prayers and Zakat (charity).
