This gentle ghost story seems short on real surprises, yet manages to leave the reader feeling quite satisfied at the end. Grace finds an old paintbox and some paintings secreted in a cupboard of her new home. Thence troubled ghosts of the Victorian era start manifesting themselves in the present, leading to the anniversary of a supposed drowning in 1861; the past and the present meet to achieve almost the same end result. A bit of love interest, a shot of bullying and a sceptical step-dad weave in and out of this short novel, principally likely to appeal to readerly girls.
