In reassuring, simple language, this author's message is that everyone is special. The story is set amongst hens, and the colourful Rhode Island Red, White Leghorn, Black Rock and Silver Lace have all won first prizes. Arrogantly they tell Little Hen she can't win prizes - she is too small. Then Little Hen disappears. The boastful hens are amazed when she eventually returns, bringing with her a wonderful family of chicks. This picture book works at various levels, with the bold, painterly illustrations lending it a memorable distinction.
