Daisy May is a foundling who grows up in a foundling hospital; at the age of ten she goes into service. And although her story is very much fiction, it is told in such a way that the reader will readily identify and empathise with Daisy and her life in late Victorian England. Daisy never gives up hope that some day things will improve for her, and by weaving elements of a ghost story into this tale, a happy ending is hinted at. Skilfully told, with Donnelly's illustrations making the characters seem more real, I found the book difficult to put down.
