World history for 6-8 year olds? Only a brave publisher could attempt such a task, yet even at Key Stage 1 children are now encouraged to describe the passing of time to develop their chronological understanding. Any misgivings I might have had were quickly dispelled by the reaction of a group of 6- and 7-year-olds sharing this book, clearly fascinated by the detailed artwork and happy to recognize photos of pyramids, a Roman legionary or a painting of Henry VIII. The mix of artwork and photogrphy works particularly well, and the text and interest level is just right for the age group. World history is covered in a broad sweep that encompasses the first hunter-gatherers, Ancient Greece, a Medieval village, Ming China, Moghul India, the Russia of Peter the Great, the opening up of the American West and two World Wars. Simple links to a range of appropriate websites enable children to find out more - exploring a castle, the city of Machu Picchu or the palace of Versailles, for example - but the book stands alone for those without access to a computer. An excellent first introduction to history that is sure to whet the appetite.
