Following a disastrous breakage, Tilly mouse and her siblings search for a replacement present for Mum's birthday but the things they find -- strawberries, feathers and a beautiful flower -- belong to other animals: taking them wouldn't be right. Then Tilly's luck changes: Vole, Blue Tit and Rabbit are all happy to donate something to help. So, after a busy creative session, the mice rush home in time to present mum with a special birthday collage coloured red with strawberry, blue with feathers and golden yellow with pollen dust. The rather pedestrian telling is lifted by Ellis's verdant watercolour scenes of life in the undergrowth and the endearing portrayals of the assorted small birds and animals.
