The narrator of this rather surreal picture book returns home to find his dad is out and there is no food in the house. Rsigned to a foodless night he goes to bed early (where can dad be?). But some very odd dreams soon begin, all centred on food. Carpenter's clever collaged art work builds up a dad made entirely of fruit and vegetables, all edible. Readers really shouldn't delve into the deeper psychological interpretations of this story, and as long as they don't they will be treated to an imaginative and visually delicious treat. The coloured cut-outs are bright and attractive and readers are involved by the offering of a selection of vegetables from which Dad's components must be assembled.
