This is a one to ten counting book with a difference. 'Duckie was ready to take her ducklings for a swim. She looked about but they were nowhere to be seen.' From this moment the pages get shorter one by one, and, one by one, the ducklings appear. We feel like shouting 'They're behind you!, but Duckie doesn't turn round until right at the end, when all ten of them are there for her to see and count. There are other things to count in the pictures - butterflies, caterpillars, strawberries - but it's up to you to notice them. This is a book to read and re-read, and find more things to count, and the questions are begging to be asked: 'Have all the ducklings appeared yet?', 'How many more are we waiting to see?'. The book is shaped into a friendly strokeable curve, and it's lovely to hold and feel. A good counting book is such a joy.
