When Piglet loses her mother the other farmyard mothers offer comfort – Duck with a cuddle, Sheep with a daisy chain, Donkey with a game of chase, Dog with a roll in the mud, Horse with a dance in the daffodils and Cat with a sunny snooze; but, these hold no attraction for the increasingly distraught Piglet – at least until her Mama is found.

Piglet’s misery is made all the more poignant by the blissful joy and contentment of the other animal babies with their mums which Stephen Michael King manages to convey with his deceptively simple watercolours outlined and animated with deft ink lines and dots. The ‘aaah’ factor is most definitely there in this beautifully told, patterned tale. JB
