Burger Boy

Benny didn’t like vegetables. He liked burgers, so much so that his Mum warned him he may turn into a burger one day. We watch the illustrations as he is transformed into a juicy burger. He attracts numerous dogs, hounding him across a double spread, all howling and hollering as his Mum yells, ‘Run, Benny!’ He thinks he may hide safely in a field of cows, but no, he is off at a trot again, with a herd of cows, a pack of dogs, and soon a gang of hungry boys chasing him. This cautionary tale has a wonderfully humorous ending. Mum rescues him from a terminal situation in the nick of time, Benny swearing he’ll never ever eat another burger. But a surfeit of vegetables, his new diet regime…?! Part in rhyme, part in speech bubbles, the text climbs up and down the pages throughout the adventure, growing and shrinking in size. The book is hugely supported and enhanced by the cartoon-type illustrations. These are full of humorous vigour, and will attract a young child’s attention for further readings. And maybe the dietary message will have some import! GB
