A charming autobiography by an endearing American white mouse, who is bought, sold, traded by good children, bad children and some in between. Christopher Mouse’s episodic adventures also involve escaping through a museum on the way, ultimately, to a happy home. He becomes a budding poet too.

My ten-year-old daughter absolutely loved reading this book. It’s a gentle read, somewhat old fashioned in a way, but it never becomes over sentimental. It touches on issues such as laboratory experiments on animals, without preaching to the reader. Benson’s illustrations, sadly limited to only one per chapter, are wonderfully understated. AK
