Baby Brains is no ordinary baby. He is a superstar; a musical prodigy, a player and composer, possibly due to his mother playing music to him while she was pregnant with him. From birth Baby Brains quickly becomes accomplished at playing the piano, cello, tuba and timpani drums – providing great scope for humour in the delightful illustrations which are a cross between Hoffnung and Quentin Blake. Winning a local talent show propels Baby Brains into the national spotlight, as his prize is to perform in a football stadium at an open air rock concert. He gets a makeover to prepare him for the event. (I love the illustration of his stylist trying to work a miracle with Baby Brains’ one hair!) As Baby Brains is lowered by helicopter onto the stage to take the crowd by storm he suddenly gets stage fright and cries for his mummy. An amusing read which, as we are saturated these days by young X Factor wanabes, will strike a chord.
