One of a series of twelve stories, centring on the youngest of four siblings. Rita is always left out of things. However, no sooner have the older three children started to do more interesting activities, than Rita becomes pivotally involved in amazing adventures. She turns into Rita the Rescuer. Rita in the Deep Blue Sea sees our heroine retrieving ice creams from a thieving octopus and then, in rapid succession, freeing a diver from a giant clam, rescuing stranded occupants of a grounded submarine, saving scuba divers from a giant eel and foiling a would-be swordfish attack on a deep sea diver. More rescues follow before, in true superhero style, Rita is reunited with her unsuspecting family. Fairly basic stories but the vibrant full colour illustrations make them a good, light read.

Other stories in the series are Rita and the Romans, Rita at Rushybrook Farm and Rita in Rocky Park.
