I hope Lear would be pleased at the pretty presentation that some of his best-known verses and limericks have received from Summersdale. Colour does not always suit his emphatic line drawings but Rob Smith’s pale tints, laid on slightly haphazard, are exactly what are required (contrast the vulgar splodges in a recent fancy Folio Society edition) and the book’s small square format is also well-chosen. The joyous concluding drawings should though be given their proper lordly title of ‘The Heraldic Blazons of Foss the Cat’. BA
