This book is about the most important festival in the Islamic Year. Id-ul-Fitr is of great significance for Muslims as it is celebrated only at the end of Ramadan – the holy month of fasting. The author explains the background to the festival including its abstract and spiritual aspects. The transition of these principles into the practical aspects of daily life is also discussed.

The book deals with how the month of Ramadan enforces the routine of self-discipline, which is distinct from the other eleven months of the Muslim year. It is for this reason that Id-ul-Fitr is celebrated with great excitement and pleasure. Interestingly the text deals with how the festival is celebrated by Muslims from different countries and cultures. It is written in a simple and straightforward manner suitable for young readers as well as being eminently suitable as a text that can be read and discussed with the class as a whole.

The book is illustrated with large, bold and colourful photographs. Each of the 10 chapters begins with a double page spread. Supplementary information is provided in the wide margins and highlighted boxes entitled ‘Did you know?’ In summary this is a useful text for use in classrooms, which will help educate children accurately regarding this festival.
