‘J is for Jamaica, where the sun shines all year round,
Here waterfalls and mountains and beaches can be found.
The island is a place where many tourists like to be,
On the map you’ll see it smiling in the Caribbean sea.’

The above excerpt from J is for Jamaica should demonstrate that this is not a conventional alphabet book aimed at acquainting pre-nursery or nursery children with the alphabet, as the language and concepts are pitched at children somewhat beyond that level. Rather, Zephaniah uses the alphabet as a handy format to celebrate in warm, affectionate verse, the A-Z delights of Jamaica from its fruits, flowers, markets, landscape, to its people and culture. As such, this book is an enchanting way of introducing children to this beautiful Caribbean island, as well as sharing in Zephaniah’s passion for poetry. Prodeepta Das’ photographs add authenticity and atmosphere to the book. EL
