Hello, Who’s There? follows the journey of a baby duck, who comes upon different animals in their habitat. Aimed at very young readers, from 9 months to 2 years, the text comprises the words in the title and a response from each animal. The illustrator uses bold line and block colour. Some animals that the duck finds look ambiguous, such as a squirrel that looks like a cat, while others are rendered in quite a sophisticated and abstract manner, such as the butterfly and the bee. The pop-ups throughout are sturdy and simple, which should ensure that they do not break with repeated use. The overall result is a book that looks beautiful but lacks emotion, which is a vital aspect of any book for this early age group.
