Sahir Goes to the Dentist

Chris Petty
Translated by Jolanta Starek-Corile
32pp, INFORMATION STORY/DUAL LANGUAGE, 1844448524
5-8 Infant/Junior

This is essentially an information book about a dental check-up presented with a mix of computer 3D illustration and actual plasticene models. These are framed thoughtfully and laid out almost like the book of an animated film (given the setting, less worrying than photographs I suppose). The text is simple, to the point – two typefaces are used to clearly distinguish the Polish and English texts. Lots of white space around both texts and illustrations help to make this a visually appealing book – which is important, as there is not much storyline or humour to be had. However, there is enough in the illustrations to invite children’s comment on their own experiences. The main aim of the book is to clearly present what happens at a routine check-up and that, I feel, is well achieved. ( Available in 26 dual language versions.)
