This lift the flap alphabet book from the well-known picture book partnership has their familiar cartoon style illustrations and plenty of amusing details and speech bubbles thrown in for extra interest and involvement in the book. It’s a clear format, both in terms of typography and illustrations – lots of white space around both make it visually very effective. Following the tried and tested alphabet book formula, we are presented with a list of words for each letter. Quite a varied list mostly, the only disappointment being the letter ‘Ii’ page where they seem to have fallen back on ‘Indian brave’ and Indian chief’. As you read down the list of words, for ‘Tt’, for example, you note the tigers sipping from teacups and the toucan perching on the teapot but where is the tortoise? Lift the flap under the teapot and there he is, muttering an alliterative phrase to tease your tongue. Delightful.
