There’s nothing cloying about these short novels set in and around fairy school, and aimed at girl readers. There are three stories per book, and each of them centres on Felicity and her friends, who have the same interests, adventures and preoccupations as girls today. Themes such as making the best of a bad fashion moment or experiencing the disappointment of a new hairstyle ( Holly’s Hideaway ), enjoying the trickeries of Fairy Fool’s Day or regretting the consequences of eating too many sweets ( Fairy Fun ) are here turned into moral lessons on growing up and behaviour towards others. Essentially non-conflictive, the stories are fun and light-hearted – with black and white illustrations of elongated, pirouetting fairy characters adding to the enjoyment.
