Damian Drooth has met up with his gang who are also members of his Detective School, but he is alarmed that Lavender is in tears. She explains that old Mr Swan is no longer friendly – instead he is grumpy and unkind. The kids go round to investigate, and so Damian becomes embroiled in a meeting of Inventors Anonymous, one of whose members has stolen Mr Swan’s plans. Later that night, he camps out in Mr Swan’s garden, and is able to solve the crime albeit by accident. Damian’s asides and reflections will ring true to any child reading the book, and adults reading the book will chuckle with recognition at Damian’s ploys. Ross is successful, as ever, in capturing the expressions and feelings of each character portrayed with one deft swipe of his pen or brush. To be enjoyed.
