Dottie Duck watches as animals play games with each other. Squirrels play acorn tennis, caterpillars chase each other across a leaf. Seeing everyone play makes Dottie lonely as there is no one to play with her. When she arrives home, she finds that her mother’s egg has hatched. Now there is someone who will play with her. This simple story is aimed at children from around 18 months to three years. The images comprise bold blocks of colour that immediately attract the eye. The pop-ups use a novel rotation device that is very sturdy and pre-school friendly. Overall, Kitamura has produced a book that hits all the right buttons and is superbly positioned for the target audience.
