Three cheers for Franklin Watts for celebrating not just women but British women, as well as men of course, in this series of collected biographies, each title concentrating on a different area such as engineering, science, music or sport. This volume focuses on people who were catalysts for change, whether campaigning against racism or child labour, or fighting for civil liberties or women’s suffrage. Brief biographies are included for each of the 20 Britons chosen, together with a summary of their achievements. They range from anti-slavery champion Wilberforce and prison reformer Elizabeth Fry to recent campaigners like the environmentalist Jonathon Porritt and human rights lawyer Shami Chakrabati. Factboxes help expand the entries by including information on other pioneers in the field. The author is strong on women’s rights and politics and justifies her choice of candidates. A detailed glossary is included as well as sources of further information and places to visit. A useful and well organised reference tool for project work.
