Pit-bull dogs are about to be banned because they are thought to be too dangerous when Mackenzie, who has very little going for him, is given a pit-bull puppy called Cash. With something to love and care for, Mackenzie’s life is changed until his father, after a row, takes Cash and dumps him. As Mackenzie pines for Cash we see the dog trying desperately to survive on his own living off scraps and trusting no one. His night-time sorties start to engage a network of individuals, some good, some bad, who start to see something special in him until he becomes a people-rescuing hero who also brings new life to previously isolated individuals. It’s very short, very easy to read and it ought to be sloppily sentimental but it actually works as a heart-warming, feel-good story where unlikely twists of plot allow us to keep hoping and knowing that all will turn out well.
