This familiar looking non-fiction text from Franklin Watts has quite a lot going for it. Different aspects of eight-year-old Henna’s life are glimpsed on each double-page spread with clear visuals and typography. With a contents page, glossary, index and good layout of text and photographs throughout the book, this makes for a purposeful reference book for primary aged children. Titles and captions are clearly highlighted through larger and bolder type and there is enough variety in the way the text and photographs are placed together to make it visually interesting. Most importantly, the text, noted as being co-authored by eight-year-old Henna, reads well; we hear about where she lives (Preston), her family, friends, school, hobbies, languages and clothes amongst other things. Good content, well presented – as books on religious/community life go, I like this one.
