This is a daring piece of humorous writing and it works. Docherty has written a tale set in the sort of estate that is often depicted as an urban hell, and while he presents the intimidation and organised crime that can infect such communities, he does so with humour and hope. When Jake is mugged, and everyone shrugs this off as something he has to learn to live with, he refuses to take this course and instead tackles the crooks. Chaos and bumbling heroics result but at a readable pace that makes this one of the most accessible books I’ve encountered in a while.

It’s also very funny, with some great dialogue – particularly the discussions amongst Jake’s friends and the encounters with the Mr Big of the story. While the book is best pitched at older juniors and early secondary, it’s an easy and engaging read so should also enjoy an audience a bit younger. The reality is gritty in places, but the junior age group need a good few more books that manage to spring from the tougher realities of life. This book reminds me of the real city where I teach, and I’m pleased to think that it may do the same for my pupils.

That said, I would be stunned if this book doesn’t receive complaints – with its muggings, crudity, van stealing and pet killing. These objectionable features are just the things that will make it a hit with those who can appreciate Docherty’s walk on the wild side, and enjoy joining in.
