A highly illustrated guide to dinosaurs and the prehistoric world, enlivened with flaps and fold-out pages and, best of all, a secret drawer, which pops open when you press the glittering eye of a ferociously grinning Parasaurolophus. Tucked inside are such goodies as dinosaur stickers, postcards, flick book and a model T Rex to build (though sadly ours defied construction, having been printed without the all-important tabs). The book is produced on sepia-tinted pages with hand lettering, as though it were a turn of the century palaeontologist’s notebook. In fact the text is straightforward non-fiction, so the device is simply there for looks. Key dinosaur finds are highlighted on ‘luggage labels’ for the interest of budding palaeontologists and ‘feely’ textured fossil images add a further three-dimensional element. The whole makes an attractive package for a dinosaur lover, and the involvement of the Natural History Museum gives it a stamp of approval and ensures a ready audience.
