Here are two Energy-saving volumes which do more or less the same job in different ways.

Using takes a formal approach, defining energy and its sources before explaining methods of obtaining and using it more effectively and efficiently than the reader is presently presumed to do. There are many good examples of good practice – photovoltaic roof panels, recycled building materials, turning down the thermostat, biofuel briquettes and reforestation – all clearly expressed and relevantly illustrated.

Why ShouldI? extends a much more common and friendly touch – working on the premise that we can all do energy-saving as part of daily life and if enough of us do enough of it, we’ll last longer. Again we look at energy sources and uses, but all the time we’re told how to help – switch off the TV, put on a sweater, fill the washing machine, shut the fridge door (fridge being the most energy-hungry machine in most homes). The result is a much more enjoyable and credible read than Using with no sacrifice of facts or standards.
