Along the lines of Horrid Henry comes Dirty Bertie, who faces the predicaments that all young boys face. Does he solve them in similar manner? Absolutely, and Roberts’ illustrations accurately capture the expressions of delight or disgust that result from Bertie’s misdeeds. Thanks to Bertie a Nativity Play gets disrupted, Santa’s elf turns into a goblin and a none too cheerful aunt is dealt with. The rich vein of slapstick that courses through the book will appeal greatly to all KS1 listeners and readers; although Bertie does not always come out on top, the general hilarity of the book will carry readers along in a suitably riotous fashion.
