This large, colourful book has a terrific visual joke at the end. The Giant Squid thinks he is the biggest thing in the ocean until he is swallowed by a whale. The sea creatures the book introduces – shrimp, mussels, crabs, jellyfish and turtles – are drawn with a strong line which makes for the sort of bold pictures that appeal to the very young. Kevin Sherry used paper collage and watercolour to make the images; then he layered the art on huge pieces of Plexiglas. The result of this technique is the creation of an ocean and its sea creatures that seems positively to glow. An engaging and original book, this would support young children’s developing concept of size and would be fun to have at home or in the nursery class.
