Baby animals from tigers to tadpoles, bears to beavers, kangaroos to kittens as well as puppies, eagles, warthogs and moles are featured in this counting rhyme based on the traditional ‘Over in the Meadow’. But this is much more than a counting book. The illustrations in mixed media including oil pastel, crayon and collage are permeated with each animal’s pleasure in being.

The playful text is truly phonic fun and games with words to wrap the tongue around. It employs alliteration and onomatopoeia, repetitious sounds and rhyming, invented words and in one instance ‘strectch’ invented spelling (in error?). The handwritten-like text should lend further encouragement to children’s own versifying and general mucking about with language.
