This is the final part of the ‘King Raven Trilogy’ which takes place in the 12th century, following the reign of William the Conqueror. Friar Tuck takes centre-stage in a tale of intrigue, politics and subterfuge that sees Robin Hood – here Rhi Bran y Hud – transposed from Nottingham to the bands of Wales.

Norman invaders are determined to eliminate the threat posed to their rule by Bran and his men, so set about an onslaught on Elfael and its surroundings. Against this highly charged backdrop, Friar Tuck accompanies Bran as he attempts to rouse the Welsh to fight against the imminent invasion amassing their numbers until battle can commence.

Underpinning the central narrative thrust of the novel, ideas of what it is to live at one with the environment, faith and relationship with God and the emotional and religious ramifications of war and death are contemplated.

In an intriguing author’s note, Lawhead discusses the possibility that Rhi Bran y Hud could actually have been the genesis of the legend of Robin Hood, subtly altered over time to suit the needs and wants of various storytellers and communities. In so positing, Lawhead comes to the end of what is a memorable and often erudite series.
