Neeraj’s mother gives him a lump of her dough to play with as she makes chapattis. He squeezes it, rolls it, pinches, pokes and pulls it transforming it first into a snake, then a mouse, a cat and a lion, ‘storying’ and interacting with his mother as he plays. Then finally, the lion becomes a big round chapatti ready to puff up on the tava for Neeraj to eat.

With an Indian setting, this straightforward domestic story has a patterned text and simple uncluttered images set against a stark white background. The final page gives a recipe and instructions for making chapattis. A definite ‘should have’ for classroom sharing and a good starting point for a chapatti-making session with young children.
