Excess is often a feature of the post-modern picture book and it is found here in double spreads showing hundreds of little green peas in a thick carpet. Minimal text and arresting pictures tell the story of how peas pass from field to plate. Young learners see them planted, watered by rain and warmed by sun and then picked, processed and frozen in a factory before being sent for sale. But there is a twist: after all this hard work, they are rejected by the boy and girl in the story when the peas are served up for dinner. No wonder the peas protest: ‘Give peas a chance!’ The pictures have a bold, black line and vibrant hues making this a good book to share and talk about with a small nursery group or with a child at home.
