Bubbling with wit, language play and robust dialogue, these stories have just the right mix of ingredients to trigger young readers’ interest in all things historical. The Knight of Silk and Steel tells of an errant knight who, upon entering a tavern late one night, is forced to account for his unusual attire to an astonished audience, for he is wearing a green silk dress and blonde wig. His garb, he explains, is testimony to his devotion to Venus, goddess of love in whose name he fights and travels distant lands. The Knight of Spurs and Spirits centres on Sir Robert, renowned for his cruelty and overbearing manner, who rules Hylton Castle with an iron fist. But when he kills a poor stable lad in a fit of temper, his actions have consequences beyond the grave. Informative and entertaining, the books are attractively illustrated with lively black and white drawings.
