A generously illustrated reference guide to the Bible, its stories and content, and how these relate to Christian beliefs. Author Peter Atkinson, Dean of Worcester, explains how the Bible is in fact made up of many different books, collected and written over a long period of time. They include many different styles of writing – law, history, prophecy, songs and proverbs, but above all the stories with which children are most familiar. The book follows the chronological progress of the Old Testament, the story of the people of Israel, including background information and explanation of how historical records and archaeological evidence confirm some events. The section on the New Testament focuses on the life of Jesus and the accounts of the four Apostles. Useful comparisons are given of their differing accounts of the same events. Artwork, photographs and maps help expand the text, while cross reference panels refer the reader to specific parts of the Bible. A companion volume to The Lion Encyclopedia of Christianity, The Lion Encyclopedia of World Religions, and The Lion Encyclopedia of Jesus, this will be a useful addition to a school library or religious studies centre.
