When Dragons are Dreaming
Illustrated by Lindsey Gardiner
The brilliantly coloured artwork in this book is charmingly imaginative. The little dragon that can’t sleep is bright red, cuddly and round, and covered in circles of different colours, whilst his mother is luminous pink. The eye is captured by their forest home, collaged tree trunks with leaves of numerous colours and patterns. Whilst we gaze, we spot the fairies amongst the rich foliage. Under the star-spangled sky they skip and swing. When the little dragon attempts to join their games, crashing and smashing through the trees, they flee, telling him he is too big and lumpy and should be home, asleep. But then a fairy is trapped in a spider’s web and little dragon has the chance to become a hero. Mayhew’s gentle, rhyming text is perfect for bedtimes, and is enriched by gloriously colourful illustrations.
