Mrs Cockle's Cat
Illustrated by Antony Maitland
First published almost 50 years ago, Mrs Cockle’s cat is once again yearning for what he cannot get – fresh fish. So he disappears, and straightaway Mrs Cockle misses him, as he does not re-appear. In time she fades away, and as a balloon seller that is indeed a dangerous thing; for one day, her balloons pull her into the air with them and take her on a most unusual journey... Where she lands up and how the story resolves itself is best left to Philippa Pearce to tell you, but the generations of readers who loved the book since it was first published have not been disappointed – nor will you be! This book will be enjoyed not only by being read out in class or at bedtime, but also by newly confident readers. Well worth buying, and the introduction by Frank Cottrell Boyce at the start of the book makes for fascinating reading for anyone who is interested in children’s literature.
