Terry Deary continues to make history come alive in his ‘Knights Tales’ series based on historical events. The Knight of Swords and Spooks is about Richard the Third’s overthrow by Welsh rebel, Henry Tudor.

While the tale is not great storytelling it is a very effective vehicle for transporting readers back to the past and, in keeping with Deary’s other stunning work, it will grab readers at an age when they might otherwise switch off from history. Through the adventures of a young squire in Richard’s retinue, Deary interweaves the important events of the time. This he does right up to Richard’s end, and it’s an ending that packs something of a punch for the story of our squire.
