A gruesome subject, but one that takes centre stage in most TV cop shows and that remains a source of horrible fascination for many boys. Part of a series on Forensic Science, this volume focuses on the work of the forensic pathologist whose job is to determine the cause of suspicious deaths. Fortunately, for the fainthearted, the copious illustrations here are all in strip cartoon form, but they spare no detail in their depiction of severed heads, rotting corpses and liquefied brains. Forensic science enables police investigators to uncover the truth in the crimes depicted here, from the body in the basement, a true case of murder during the Blitz in London, to the cold-hearted case of the Pennsylvania poisoner, who inflicted a particularly painful and unpleasant end to her husband’s life with the aid of rat poison. The combination of subject matter and visual presentation will make the series a good choice for those with reading difficulties.
