Dustbin Cat
In this very readable story Billy befriends a stray cat in a town that has problems with its population of feral cats. As bonds between the boy and the cat strengthen, we are introduced to other characters in the town, each of whom has their own separate agenda and opinion on cats and survival – not to mention the boy’s parents who are living together none too harmoniously. How the story resolves highlights the role that animals play in our lives – which is often far greater than we would imagine. Interesting too for teachers and librarians is the approach that Lee takes towards such issues as cruelty and the treatment of those who do not fit in. Reading and discussing the book means that such issues are likely to be confronted and better understood. Highly recommended.
