We have met the narrator of this tale, Anna, and five-year-old Tom before in Kate Davies’s The Great Hamster Massacre. In this new tale Anna is worried about Joe who has gone to live with his dad leaving behind his pet rabbit. When the rabbit gets sick they are sure it must be missing Joe – hence the need to pull off the Great Rabbit Rescue and reunite the two. As the plot meanders along, the story diverts into various little side alleys creating something more akin to a funny scrapbook. As before Anna’s narrative voice has a delicious spark of authenticity, sounding like real child. How a little brother really talks, the tone of a family fall-out and the meandering of children’s imaginations are all effectively captured. An unpatronising, refreshing and funny story.
