ShoutAbout! is a new creative writing and illustration online magazine for children, launched by CWISL (Children’s Writers and Illustrators in South London). It was inspired by the wealth of enthusiasm they found at their events and workshops. They believe that encouraging children’s desire to tell stories is an essential part of building literacy and making them into readers.

YOUR SHOUT section hosts children’s work from all over the country – writing, drawing, painting, comic strips, comments on each other’s work; the core age is 7 –16, but contributions outside this range are not rejected.

ROUNDABOUT section shares ideas from published authors and illustrators about their craft, children’s own book reviews, competitions, quizzes, word searches, think pieces from teachers, librarians or parents (favourite books, reading, writing, illustration, news).Submission is easy, through a link on the site (under tight privacy controls). Commenting on this year’s shortlist, Rachel Levy, Children’s Library Services Manager for Sutton Libraries and chair of the CILIP Carnegie judging panel said: ‘Choosing the CILIP Carnegie shortlist is always a tough call but the strength of this year’s field was exceptional. These books will take readers to some dark and difficult places, but all the books are ultimately about the beauty and hopefulness of life.’

Blue Peter Awards 2012

American Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid has been voted Best Children’s Book of the Last Ten Years by the nation’s children in a special online vote.

Young voters were asked to choose their favourite book from a shortlist of ten titles that included Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and books by former Children’s Laureates Jacqueline Wilson, Michael Morpurgo and Quentin Blake as well as comedian David Walliams.

Gareth P Jones’s werewolf mystery The Considine Curse won the Blue Peter Book of the Year. Over 300 school pupils between age eight and 12 from across the UK read the four books and voted for Gareth’s as their favourite.
